Sidewalks and boulevards are public property and as such the government controls what is done there.
This has not been a major issue in our campaign, but, in my
door-knocking adventures I have come across several home-owners who were
not happy with the bill from the mandatory sidewalk repair that occurred
this Spring. From what I've heard, residents had their sidewalks
re-paved without much notice (and some have claimed no notice) and then
were stuck with the hundred + dollar tab.
I'm all for safe sidewalks (who isn't?), but can anyone on the list
offer up an explanation of why the city did not spread out the costs of
the repairs city-wide via a general fund? Sidewalks and boulevards are
public property and used by all in the city. It seems a bit unfair to
stick the bill of the repair onto the private property owner that
happens to be adjacent to dilapidated public property (the sidewalks).
Thanks.
