Some of the greatest little spots to eat are tucked away in the Mercado
Central on Bloomington and lake. No Marachi bands though. You want to hear
great South of the border music then a night at Rodeo at 27th and Lake will
get you hopping. The Salsa dancing at Babalu's isn't bad either.
I have only heard Mariachi bands at the various festivals on Lake Street
throughout the year and believe it or not in my own backyard. I have the
most marvelous Latino neighbors behind me and they do know how to
party. They have big celebrations on occasion and two summers ago had a
wedding celebration with a live Marachi Band - it was great. We sat
outside our apartment house in our lawn chairs and listened and lo and
behold they came over and asked us to join them.
It was a blast.

I ate at El Taquito in West St. Paul a few weeks ago; I tried beef tongue for
the first time, and it was pretty good. I've been to several places on Lake
St. and I've liked them all in spite of being born and raised in Los Angeles
where I frequented many Mom'n'Pop style Mexican restaurants on my lunch
hour and
I liked them all too, although I've never been to one here or there that had
Mariachi musicians. I like Pineda Tacos in the Hi-Lake center (and W. St.
Paul
now) and apparently so do Mpls Police officers because I saw them the last
few times I was there. I've also tried great places on Central in
Northeast near
Lowry. I've always been grateful that there were no Mariachis around though;
the music and lyrics can be pretty depressing and there are better styles of
music to eat to I think. I think if you're looking for Mariachis outside of a
special event, you'd be better off checking out bars with entertainment where
they might be drowning their sorrows, or hire yourself a group.
Hopefully, Michael will get some better and more informed responses, but I
think the best thing for him to do is to take his walkman or ipod with
recorded
music to just about any of the places on Lake St.
