The most important thing we can do for our city and our world right now is
to walk and bike more.
In the city walking and biking increases individual health and community
health and safety. Pollution and crime go down when healthy street life is
present.
We spend less on gas and have more to spend in our neighborhoods when we
walk and bike.
Right now the bike/pedestrian share of transportation in the city is around
3%, I believe.
If we could bring the bike/ped share up to 10% (an entirely reasonable,
achievable goal, I think) we would do more to help our city and our world
than spending money on any other project.
I am glad that $ one billion was included in the federal bill for bike
paths. However, out of $286.5 billion this is far to little to spend on
active transportation modes.
We've been subsidizing cars so heavily and in so many ways that we are blind
to it. It is time to create a new infrastructure.
Good for Cara Letofsky for her support of the Greenway and for her ongoing
commitment to developing bike infrastructure.
I will note that we have plenty of pavement in the city for bikes. Bikes
take up very little room and are far safer than cars. Bikers and
pedestrians crash less than cars do, and when they crash they seldom kill or
injure other people.
Bikes and pedestrians are more kid-friendly, more neighborhood-friendly, and
all-around more humane than any other form of transportation.
