As a Republican who believes strongly in core principles (no longer followed at
the national level) of smaller government, fiscal restraint, free markets, and
personal liberty, I have to respectfully disagree with Mr. Hoover's comparison
of the two parties. I agree with some of his other observations about the
long-term domination of the DFL in Minneapolis and what that has meant, but the
solution is not to assign inaccurate labels. The solution is to educate
potential voters and motivate like-minded people to get to the polls and win
elections.

I'm fortunate to live in a ward (#2) that has two dedicated, hard working
people vying for the open council seat. To the best of my knowledge, both are
running ethical, take-the-high-road campaigns, keeping voters focused on their
own positions and goals rather than trashing their opponent. Their approach
shows respect for the office, for the voters, and for themselves. That being
said, I'm considering a vote for the candidate who is furthest away from my
personal political orientation. I believe both Cara and Cam would do a good
job of representing the majority views in this ward. But, to echo part of
Gary Hoover's comments, I would like to see the DFL control of the council be
challenged more often, and that means I might be voting Green in Ward 2.
