Rybak Campaign Calls on Commissioner McLaughlin to Halt Negative Attacks
I don't recall Peter making negative attacks- he's just been
pointing out R.T.'s failure to protect us from the current crime
wave, make our city energy independent, etc.. That's not negative
attacks, that's the facts!
In a letter hand delivered today to Commissioner McLaughlin's campaign
office, Mayor Rybak's campaign manager John Blackshaw called on Mr.
McLaughlin to
publicly request his top supporter, the Police Federation, to curtail its
expected distorted attack campaign directed at Mayor Rybak.
This at first sounds like a desperation ploy, but I'll cut
Mr. Blackshaw some slack as he may be unfamiliar with the long
history of the Minneapolis Police Department's involvement in local
politics. Suffice to say, there a pretty independent lot, showing no
deference to even mayors. In fact, they're opposing the mayor they
endorsed last time and supporting Peter instead. So I doubt Peter
will be any more likely to tell them how to do their politics than
R.T. was.
"We've heard that Police Federation president John Delmonico is about to
engage in a highly negative assault against Mayor Rybak," said Blackshaw, "I
expect the attacks to be similar to the primary - full of distortions and
attempting to scare people. That's politics at it worst. That's why we've
asked Commissioner McLaughlin to ask his top supporters to stop the attacks
before they are launched."
So why didn't the Rybak campaign deliver their complaint
directly to the Police union instead of bothering Peter's office?
There just a little farther northeast up University Avenue, and while
a rather strong speaker Mr. Delmonico is quite a gentle man and I'm
sure he'd be happy to accept your missive. But then you might miss
the chance to paint Peter with the same brush as the police union.
"Commissioner McLaughlin can stop it if he wants to", Blackshaw continued. "
If he says or does nothing about this, then voters will have to ask
themselves, 'What kind of leader is he? He talks about being a
strong leader but he
can't even get his top supporters to stop slinging the mud'."
Mr. Blackshaw, put down the mud. Let's talk facts in this
campaign. Fact is that the Police Union is making an "independent
expenditure", and there is no legal way Peter can tell them what to
do with their "independent expenditure".
