After reading the Lavender Mag Ward 9 news-and seeing this quote by

M. for the link..but can you explain or list the 40 bars?
One list is posted on a local blog (http://
cleanairquality.blogspot.com/) ... the blog entry with a list of
restaurants/bars is here: http://tinyurl.com/8rkwq Be forewarned
-- the blogger is a rabid opponent of the smoking ban.
As to the list. I'm aware that several of the bars/restaurants on
the list closed for either:
- a variety of reasons and it's unclear what role the smoking ban
played; and/or
- another reason (e.g. Chang O'Hara's in St Paul closed due to
bankruptcy filed as a result of loss of a lawsuit).
You will note that I've made this known to the blogger. He doesn't
seem to particularly care as it interferes with the position he takes.
That said, I suspect that some of the restaurants/bars can trace
their demise to the smoking ban. Whether the owner(s) failed to
construct/implement a meaningful business plan is up in the air in my
mind. Whether it could have been avoided is arguable but difficult
to prove one way or another.
Nobody likes to see a bar or restaurant fail ... a small business
person suffer financial loss ... or employees lose their jobs. I
continue to think that the differences between Ramsey County and
Hennepin County creates distortion that is a problem ... and if that
was solved, there would be a problem at the borders of Hennepin and
Ramsey Counties with continguous counties. But a metro-wide standard
would be preferable in my mind to minimize such distortions.
(Obviously, there's no perfect solution here ... just a better
solution, IMO.)
I support the smoking ban concept ... just not thrilled with its
implementation.
