I don't think this is the central issue at all. First of all, the Strib was not writing specifically about the Lander project. Second of all, NIMBY activists consistently oppose any building above 4 stories, Shoreland Overlay or not -- see Lagoon Mixed-Use, Calhoun Square, an 8 story condo/Walker Library, etc. > These ordinances say that > buildings are limited to 35 feet tall within 1000 feet of our waterways, and > were passed after the awful Lake Point building was built that destroys the > view from the east side of Lake Calhoun, the most used part of our chain of > lakes. Thank you to David Brauer for pointing out that this is not really accurate. Buildings taller than 35 feet simply require a conditional use permit. CUP's are pretty standard. For instance, in an R6 district, I believe you need a CUP to have more than 5 units in a building. Are you going to tell me that 6-unit apartment buildings are illegal? The city is absolutely "upholding" its ordinance which requires additional review for buildings over 35 feet. > Actually, all developers in the area should oppose such degradation of > this amenity that is the big attraction to the area. We're not talking about anything that would be harmful to the lake itself. I could agree that strict environmental controls on a building are important, but this is not what you're talking about. What it seems you're talking about is being able to see tall buildings while at the lakes. I don't see what the problem is here; we can already see the entire downtown skyline. We're not going to be able to create the illusion that we're up north. We're in the city, and the lakes feel urban already, even if we don't add a single building over 2.5 stories. --Jeff Rosenberg East Isles REMINDERS: 1. Be civil!
