Tobias, Could you push out a rrdtool 1.0.5 with the libtool changes I added to 1.0.3 and with the differences you put in between 1.0.3 and 1.0.4? This will make it easier to work on supplying patches to a common code base, instead of patches for the libtool 1.0.3 or 1.0.4.
To get the new automake/libtool system build static by default and make shared optionally, replace the following line AC_DISABLE_STATIC with AC_DISABLE_SHARED in configure.in. To have both static and shared, remove the AC_DISABLE_STATIC completely. However, I think that if the user will be building the perl RRDs.so module, then shared building should be enabled in addition to a static library. If not, then build only a static module. You don't want users to have to specify a shared library if they are going to compile RRDs.so.
