Dear Brett,

Thanks again for your time and patience.

In actual fact, I had already tried doing exactly as you suggested,ie,
having split the database and verified that the first instance of FE
works, to copy that FE to the other machine(s).

It was at that point that things went wrong. I could not open the copy
of the verified working FE.

I tried removing and reinstalling Office and the original wrong path
message went away but as soon as the FE did start to open the whole
thing froze.

I spoke to a tek acquaintance on this and he tried to explain
somehting about W98 memory leaks interfering with Office. He suggested
that I delete and redo the partition and do a clean install of
everything from scratch...and I'm happy to say that it worked. With
one curious exception: the fresh copy of the FE had full functionality
immediately but it "lost" ALL report formats related to printing..
margins, end of page etc etc. I tried copying again and it has done
the same thing. Not the end of the world but a pain, nonetheless.

Again, said tek friend just blamed W98.....

Frankly the whole thing is beyond me and as it is actually working I
don't feel inclined to spend that much time in trying to understand
what was going on. That said, I wonder if you have come across similar
behaviour?

Thanks again,

George

PS: Identical installation of W98 and Office 2K (from same disks)
working on first PC without a hitch.
