If you are familiar with western notation and basic music theory (can read rhythms, understand beats, and count notes on a scale) then Jianpu notation may only take 15 minutes to learn (or even less time if you have someone explain it in person). Wikipedia has a good explanation (that's where I first learned it). I have also seen a person explain it in a workshop in less than a minute (and judging from the nodding heads around the room most people understood the concept).
