If I understand correct you don't want to use eSpeakNG because it uses pcaudiolib which is GPL in opposite to eSpeak which uses Portaudio with its "absolutely free" license. IMO in respect to the eSpeak executable or a GPL speech sever application there is no difference if the audio lib is GPL or "absolutely free". The licenses of the linked audio backend libs must be respected too BTW.

For the eSpeak library I suppose it was not possible otherwise because of the integration of existing GPL'ed parts maybe from universitary environment.
