Hi all! Solution has been found. It appears that applying an SRU disables the stmf service (why? WHY?) which isn't reflected *anywhere* in the stmfadm or fcinfo output. The ports are simply "Offline" with no idea why.
Five hours of fiddling plus another two hours of fiddling plus a give-up and reinstall a test host from scratch to find the cure was "svcadm enable stmf" On one hand I'm shouting, on the other hand I'm somewhat elated that the problem is actually solved with no blocks to deployment.
