It only downloads the update(s) that it needs which can be from any available
and accessible package. This is why is doesn't matter what package the updates
are in.

Alright guys, thanks for all of the information and clarification. One last
question:

when a client needs an update in an update package, does it download the whole
package, or just the one update?

There's no difference in this aspect in ConfigMgr 2012 or 2007. The package an
update is in is irrelevant. The only thing that matters is that it is in an
available an accessible package if the client needs it.

My apologies if the creator of SCCM is on this mailing list! Everything else
is great, no offense meant.

Thanks man, I just found something online that backs us up on that. Coming
from updates in their glory in 2012, 2007 was really terrible.

You are correct. It doesn't matter what update package the update files are in,
as long as they are on a DP that is available to the client.

Subject: [mssms] Confusion regarding updates, and deployment packages SCCM 2007

Hi all,

I've taken over the Windows updates recently ,for a very, very distributed
client with very poor links. They have a requirement to break updates up into
packages as close to 500 MB as possible, because of their bandwidth
restrictions.

This months updates required three separate updates packages. I've deployed
the updates list now, and pointed it at the first of the three packages. Do I
now need to deploy the other two packages as well?

I seem to remember reading that it doesn't matter which package updates are
in, the SCCM deployments management mechanism will handle it all, so long as
the packages are distribute. Is this how it goes or did I somehow wishfully
fabricate this feature?

I'm at home deploying software and OS deploy using SCCM, just a bit fuzzy on
some of the details for updates.

  Thanks guys,

Stephen Owen
