I was giving it some thought myself. In addition to the extra space that would be saved by Windows’ block-level deduplication over ConfigMgr’s file level, it would also reduce the wasted space for content you’d rather run from the distribution point and thus have to replicate to the package share.
Additionally, it would be nice for any duplicate content you might share for regional help desks when they need access to “unpackaged” media (if it’s on the same volume).
