I ask as I have 3 images which are used in production. Also several autodesk
products two of which take 30GB each! IS the built in deduplication in sccm
2012 r2 able to dedup blocks for wim files and two packages with many similar
files?

Thanks.

That was linked to storage issues.

On that link you sent does not “Hmmmm use with caution, I'm currently working
with very large design apps (10GB+) and have mixed results distributing content
to de-dup enabled DPs. I left a number of packages, circa 30GB worth,
distributing over night, all were still in progress this morning. I flicked
de-dup off and they started to complete. Maybe the lesson here is to be less
agressive with the de-dup settings, I had it set to 0 days to de-dup
everything. I'll reinstate later with 5-10 days” make you question whether you
would recommend it to a client?

There are other people using it with huge savings

Well, everyone has to decide for themselves

Adam Meltzer, of Microsoft fame, says that deduplication is not supported with
CM12 here:

That’s not as official as core documentation or a corporate blog, but it’s good
enough for me.

On the SOURCE folder, yes - that would be a good plan, as would the
deduplication of VHDs both of which is not only supported but exceedingly good
practice. I thought that my comment was pretty explicit that I was referring
to DPs only.

As for supportability I am pretty sure that there would not have been a test
plan to test the interaction - ergo there would be no support for it. As far
as I know, and having asked the question directly before this should not work
although not tested it myself.

Not supported says it where?

CM12: file based only, the exact same file twice is stored once only but for
the library only.
Server2012: Content based and for the whole volume, also works e.g. with VHDs.

Use Dedup for example on the source folder of the packages…
I use it also for the content library, it squeezes even more out of it.

SCCM 2012 has its own dedupe mechanism for content. It would not be supported
or recommended to implement dedupe on DPs

Can this work on DPs to cut down on the amount of storage needed?
Is it supported?
