You had the newer ADK for Update 1, so the R2 installer didn't find what it was expecting. That's my guess. I don't have an SP1 setup to try it against. I went to mess with R2 and the upgrade process, and was forced to downgrade the ADK from ver 8.5 to 8.1. Did I miss the boat somewhere on something?!
