I've been having a problem with some of my NT and 2000 workstations pausing
or freezing from time to time when a user attempts to open files or view
directory listing on our network. I had a user who was trying to open a
text document off the network in notepad. After double clicking on the
document notepad locked up. We had to end the process to close notepad.
Immediately afterward we tried to open the same document and it worked.
I've had other users who complain that the "Look in" combo box in the open
or save dialog box pauses for 10 to 30 seconds before it gives a drive
listing. I tend to think the two of these are related somehow.

I've recently installed a new switch but the problem isn't happening on all
the machines and it never happens when people connect to any of our other
servers although none of the other servers are used all that much as file
servers. It tends to happen on Windows 2000 and NT workstations only when
connecting to my PDC, but it doesn't happen to all workstations. My machine
for instance is without incident. I've tried installing a new NIC in the
server along with upgrading reinstalling the drivers and firmware but it
doesn't seem to help the problem. The only softwares installed on that
server are InoculateIT, Seagate Backup Exec.

Could the problem be related to the recent upgrade to 100mb on my switch and
the fact that my cat5 cables are old? In other words now that there 100mb
traveling over the older wires the data going to the server is corrupt?
Then why would people have no problems at all doing other things on the
network like print or connect to our exchange server?

I'm really starting to get fed up with this problem as I can't find a
solution. I am pretty convinced that the problems exists on my PDC but I
would like to avoid a complete OS reinstall at this point. I was wondering
if anyone out there might have seen the same problem and have a solution.

Thanks
