I'm also using a NMS8250. But my HD doesn't support LBA mode(Seagate
ST3290A 261Mb) Perhaps this is the problem.

What kind of HD's do you mean by 'other': if other HD that support LBA
don't work, then you'll probably need to remove the resistorarray. Perhaps
your CDROM will work then too!
You can verify this problem by connecting this other HD and verify that
the drive's name is displayed correctly when booting the IDEinterface. If
it isn't: remove the array and it will work.
I haven't tested a CDROM yet.
