Ah, you are not alone with IDE problems.

I had some success with the unmodified IDE interface, software form Henrik
Gilvad and a Western Digital 6,5 Gbyte (nothing else lying around...).
Worked without problems for several weeks on a unloaded 8280.
Then around xmas 98 is started playing with additional cdrom as slave and
that was not such a gooed idea, with other words, a disaster. While
experimenting the 8280 stopped working (due to a blown fuse to my relief,
too many reboots, works again like a dream...)
So i was pleasantly surprised when Jon de Schrijder made new versions of the
bios etc available. Downloaded, installed and it never worked afterwards.
Not with the hard disk alone, and certainly not with the cdrom as slave. Do
note that i did not perform the hardware update yet.
The disk went into the PC, its intended use, and i am looking for a cheap
but suitable disk for the IDE interface.
Do note that Jon (he is reading this maillist too!) warns about these kind
of problems, and did a great job writing new versions of the BIOS and also
telling us how to do a hardware update.
Hurray for Jon!

So my best advice to you (and to myself, when i have found a suitable cheap
disk)is: do the hardware update (NOTE that an update was described a couple
of weeks ago by Jon, another chip is necessary) and use the latest and
greatest software (1.86 or higher) and then try again. Be sure the disk is
operating (test on a PC for example), check the cable is connected correctly
(easy to place upside down, the MSX then stays dead), check for master/slave
jumpers (must be standalone, not master, not slave).

And tell us if you succeeded!

Hans

Subject: IDE

I have read all the messages about IDE on MSX. I have a Gilvad IDE version
1.0. I have tried several times to get any harddisk to work, no luck. Once
I had a harddisk to present himself during startup, but boot and fdisk
failed.
So my question, is there someone or a club in the surroundings of
Apeldoorn, Holland with people who can help me?
I am not a dummy user. I have 2 MSX systems running with SCSI hardddisks
and ZIP drives and have used even CDrom on them, but with IDE I don't seem
to grasp where the problem is. I want to run IDE on either 8250 (2+, 7Mhz)
or 8280 (standard) or on Turbo R.

please help!
Hans-Peter
