Dear MSX-wizards,
I have a few questions...
I'm a newbie on MSX computers, although I have used MSXs from others when I
was a child. But fortunately I was able to buy one second hand. So now I'm
the proud owner of an MSX myself. It's a Spectravideo 728 (Z80a /
ay-3-8910a) and it is functioning, since some cartridges I have (NAMCOT)
work fine on it. I also got a diskdrive along with it. But it doesn't seem
to be well connected, because when I insert the MICRO FDD INTERFACE with the
cable connected the right way to the diskdrive (PHILIPS VY 0010) the disk is
being scanned, but after a while I end up in BASIC. I do hear the beeb
before that. When I type the command: FILES, I get the message: Disk
offline.
I did check the contents of some disks with my PC and found some of them
containing msxdos, so I made a disk image of some of them and ran them with
BrMSX on my PC. They worked, so that's not the problem! The funny thing is
that my brother did get the diskdrive functioning one time, while I was
gone, but no duplo was ever achieved. ( I do believe him :)
My guess is that the Cartridge slot isn't functioning perfect, since some
cartridges I had to insert several times before they functioned. Off course
this could have to do with some oxide on the metal. I've checked the slot,
but found nothing really wrong with it. And now the Cartridges work O.K.
My questions are:
1) Is there an easy way of replacing the cartridge slot, if necessary at
all?
2) Are there still FDD INTERFACES for sale new/old ? (preferably in Holland)
3) Can I use just any diskdrive with my MSX? ( The one I now have might not
function well and can probably only handle single sided 360k disks )
4) Are my questions really THAT stupid?
5) And what is the Mitsubishi M5L8255AP-5 for?
Thanx in advance,
Fabian
P.S. I really fell in love with this machine, but without a diskdrive I
can't write anything for it nor do anything productive with it.
