Yeah, but a 7MHz 68000 is *NOT* a fast processor, whatever use you make of it!

That's it. It lost the war because even 2 68000s cannot emulate in software
what a VDP does in hardware, at a reasonable speed.

I'd like to point out an Atari ST had serious problems to move a single 16
color layer. And I don't mean SMOOTH moving!

A dedicated device yields much higher throughtput than a general purpose CPU.
