Hello,

I've been using mu4e on Emacs 24 with offlineimap and msmtp on Xubuntu
14.04 for several weeks now. The searching capabilities and ability to
link individual emails from org-mode are terrific! I'm looking forward to
discovering and utilizing more of the search features as I build a new
email workflow.

I've also had some success using mu4e with the same tools on OSX (10.9)--my
work machine is a Mac. I'm able to receive and send email for my Gmail
account and able to receive email using offlineimap and msmtp just as I can
on my Xubuntu machine. But I cannot send mail on OSX from mu4e to my work
email server that runs Exchange and provides authentication through NTLM.
After checking with our IT administrator about alternate forms of
authentication he confirmed that NTLM is the only authentication available.

With that in mind, I'm exploring two possible approaches to solving this
problem and I'd really like advice from the list about what direction to
go. I know very little about SMTP and I'm hoping that some of you can
suggest the best route to take...or perhaps even suggest an entirely
different approach!

## Objective: Ability to send email from mu4e using msmtp using NTLM
authentication on OSX (10.9)

## Possible Solution 1 -Send mail using Emacs smtp

Emacs includes a package, smtpmail, that can send mail to a smtp server
(http://bit.ly/1syJoiS). The GNU website describes the authentication
process for the smtp package which includes CRAM-MD5, PLAIN, and LOGIN
(http://bit.ly/Y17Oop). Can the smtpmail package also support NTLM as an
authentication method? It appears that it doesn't do so by default. Can
it be extended? I haven't found an answer to this question.

## Possible Solution 2 - Send mail using msmtp

Emacs provides the ability to select a smtp application besides smtpmail
which comes with Emacs. On my Xubuntu machine, I use this lisp code to do
so:

;; This code tells emacs to look for msmtp in /usr/bin/msmtp
(setq message-send-mail-function 'message-send-mail-with-sendmail
      sendmail-program "/usr/bin/msmtp")

However, although I can compile msmtp on Linux to support NTLM
authentication, I cannot seem to do so on my Mac. Obtaining NTLM support
in msmtp in Xubuntu, requires the following libraries and applications
installed in the order below.

Libntlm
http://www.nongnu.org/libntlm/

GNU SASL Library - libgsasl
http://www.gnu.org/software/gsasl/

MSMTP
http://msmtp.sourceforge.net/

As far as I can tell, the same requirements exist for OSX. But I haven't
been able to compile msmtp with NTLM support so far.

If the list has any advice about the best approach to take or even how I
might reconsider my objective, I would really appreciate it.

Thanks for your time,

Will
