A player doesn't have to be fully fit in order to pass a medical. Everyone knew Ruud had an injury back in April 2000 but they still went ahead with the medical... which found out his injury was more serious than people figured. When we signed Blomqvist he was also injured and needed a few extra weeks to regain fitness. I found this from August 27: ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- -- Manchester United's attempt to capture Rennes full-back Julien Escude appears to have ended in failure. Old Trafford chief executive Peter Kenyon met his French counterpart in Paris this evening but talks broke up without agreement after three hours and no more have yet been arranged. Unless the deal can be revived, it means manager Sir Alex Ferguson may not be able to make the reinforcements to his squad he had hoped for ahead of Saturday's international transfer deadline. The clubs had previously met two weeks ago, when a huge gap in the value of the player emerged. United were believed to be offering in the region of 2.5million, while Rennes were holding out for double that amount. "There was no more money, so there is no agreement," said a Rennes spokesman this evening. "Maybe there will be another meeting at some point but at the moment nothing has been arranged. We will wait to see what Manchester United do now." United continued their pursuit of the former French Under-21 international even though he suffered a bizarre knee ligament injury walking his dog in the middle of last week. Before that Escude had refused to train with the rest of his team-mates in protest at what he saw as Rennes trying to block his dream move. He has already spoken of his desire to join United, but Rennes are hopeful he will put tonight's bad news behind him. "He is a professional," added the spokesman. "He knew he would only be sold for a good price because he is a good player. "This is good news for our club." ------------------------ Yahoo!
