Ed - I didn't respond to you for a long time, but I've started to do
so now because primarily, in my view, you are overly simplistic about
a lot of issues. Your last two sentences are again a vast
oversimplification of what was said. I certainly did not say that
everything was perfect because we'd won. What I've said to you is
that, the performances may not be wonderful, they may be poor in some
instances, but to make judgements about how the whole season will
progress at this early stage is premature to say the least. I've said
it earlier today and I will say it again, you are not going to get
perfection or wonderful dominating performances at this stage of the
season (important qualification coming up here) when you have several
new team members and several inexperienced signings who have to be
settled in to the team. As I said again this morning, United's
preparation is always geared for the maximum tempo in March/April and
the start is frequently a little slow. Arsenal may be a little more
fluent at present, but they've had fewer personnel changes. Apart
from Toure in defence and Lehmann in goal, they're unchanged and the
players know each other better. Would I be happier if we were
dominating the PL and tearing teams apart? Of course. But, at the
back of my mind, I would also know that there will be times when the
performance drops off and when the team will play poorly and will
struggle and will have to grind out a result and there will be
defeats. It's a long season and it's too early to judge but it's
sensible to assume that the players we have purchased, who are all
quality recruits, will improve with time and will settle with time
and the performances will improve. We've played two home games and
won them both. We've also been to St James' Park and won (and while
Newcastle have had a bad week, it will still be a difficult place to
go and get a win this season) and we lost to an 88th minute goal at
St Mary's - another difficult place to go to get points. Didn't they
beat Arsenal there last year? Could we have done better? Yes, of
course, but it's too early to make any long term judgements. Until
10,12 maybe 14 matches, it's too early. Should the
team/players/manager be immune from criticism? No, of course not, but
you seem never to take any extenuating circumstances into account or
to be taking a long term view.
