Actually, DA, I believe the meaning of Ed's phrasing above is not that he knows better than the manager what is best for the club. The way I read it, he is saying that Fergie (unlike Ed) may not have the club's best interests at heart. To be specific, I read it this way: "I want what is best for the club. If that [what is best for the club] is different from what Fergie wants [i.e., some other interest or consideration], I reserve the right to say so." I will admit, the phrasing could also be read this way: "I want what is best for the club. If that [my view of what's best] is different from what Fergie wants [i.e., the specific moves he makes], I reserve the right to say so."
