The Linux HOWTO documents are an invaluable resource.  There may even be
a copy of the documents already on your hard drive.

You should first be comfortable building and installing/using an
unpatched kernel so you are familiar with the steps.  then you can move
on to patching the kernel.

In the near future I hope to have a kernel RPM for the GPR400 driver. 
Just the other day, I built a deb.
