Peter,
I have a question about some of your assumptions:

(3) Ill assume modern die for ICCs support USB [...]

How likely do you think this to be the case? We are considering adding USB contacts to some of our products that contain internal readers and I am collecting data about how useful it will be over the next few years to have a reader that supports USB.

(4) Ill assume the ICC is mounted in the 7816-1 package, managed,
personalised and issued in that form by a card management
> system; is used operationally mostly in a PCMCIA reader
> (whose own reader is present in most command and control
workstations) and a PKI manages the lifecycle of the combined
> unit (trusted PC card + 7816-1 ICC)

I think that I missed some of the initial part of this thread. Is #4
an assumption for a particular type of environment or system such as
a trusted/CC/RAPIDS type of deployment, or is your assumption for the
general computer-based smartcard area?

thanks!

mike

Never make assumptions... they are usually wrong.
