"Tap-Dance, an Atmel patent-pending solution, is easily integrated into the Wireless Local Area Network (WLAN) protocol, extending WLAN roaming capabilities by offering uninterrupted service even to time-critical applications due to its seamless and smooth handover."

The technology for effective Wireless ICCs is coming to market now. We may soon be able to realize Russel Winder's ideal: dump 30 yr old async (t0) and 25 yr old T1 (HDLC) in favour of protocols addressing streaming (and fast crypto throughput).

This doesnt means we impose 20 year old RPC on our 4Mhz 8051, 8bit micros, tho.. just because SUN put RPC into the javacard SIM! Going from T0 retries to Over the air RPC retries may not tbe the right thing to do.

We have to stop thinking of ICCs as plastic cards being inserted physically , with 20 years of legacy design on contacts, UART protocols, retries, holding us down. CCID will not break the proprietary marketing control by the reader manufacturers: it doesnt offer enough advantage over 100kbit/s 232C, really, to breakout. Now wireless is a different issue... putting a wireless SIE stacked under the smartcard die... now thats makes an interesting market modifying event.
