Yes, but what I am not sure about (still in the learning curve) is whether 
more than one pam modules can be configured on one machine, and rather if 
they can be chained.

1) gdm talks to a smart card PAM module which in turns talks to an LDAP PAM 
module
2) there is no card inserted and gdm switches from the smart card PAM module 
to the LDAP PAM module.
