I don't know a lot about smartcards, but I have done some config
tweaking with PAM. You can install multiple PAMs, and only one of them
has to 'succeed' to let you login. For instance, I have installed a ssh
PAM besides the 'normal' modules on my laptop. If I now enter my
username and my ssh-passphrase, I can login on my laptop, and the ssh-
key gets added automatically. If I use my username and UNIX password, I
can login on my laptop, but I need to run ssh-add manually to add the
key after that.
I assume you could do something similar with a smartcard PAM.
