As a quick caution, some of us are still using hardware that is not auto-detected such as a built-in serial smartcard reader. So, a method would need to be retained to either force activation so the serial driver could be loaded or to load on client connect to the service. As a practical matter, we would still need to edit system files to specify the driver and port to use, so requiring some manual intervention to force loading is not a problem as long as it can be done.
