Aha! ;) That is indeed a good question. Upon knowing the periodicity N, I used a sinewave of same length with a hanning window applied, and convolve it with the original signal within a -N/2 to +N/2 range and used the absolute maximum as the center window position (this would be the highest derivative zero crossing position).
and is it better to use asymmetrical windows?
I'm not sure but I doubt it since the information content would be the same, with my argument for that being that the ear is insensitive to individual phases of frequencies in the signal.
