I've reverted the commit.Thank you to everyone for your comments. I'm sympathetic to the desire to control your own MUA. But Vincent, Eike, Will, and Derek have been involved in Mutt far longer than I have, and I trust their judgment. When all of them agree, it's a strong sign I need to rethink things.
