Tried this while reading through a bunch of newsgroup mails - keeps

Try the newest version. It's quite nice as described in Martin's mail.
focus. I quite like the mutt behaviour where there is no swapping focus.
Some relevant key bindings are
j - previous (undeleted) message
k - next (undeleted) message
Hmmm, you nearly have that now - despite that it's reversed - "j" goes
to next, "k" to previous message. Which is much more logical when you
take into account vim's key bindings (j -> cursor down, k -> cursor up).
z - page down in message list
Z - page up in message list
Why not simply use PgUp/PgDown? This, you have now.
I fear, that using "z" here will conflict with vim bindings too much..
Space - page down in message
You have that already.
- - page up in message (that is a minus sign)
You already have Shift+Space. Sounds more logical to me. However,
currently, it seems to jump "somewhere" when you're at the beginning of
a message. Should be fixed in my eyes to go to the previous message.
Enter - scroll down one line in message
Backspace - scroll up one line in message
Here, you can already use Cursor Up/Down in the latest version from Martin.
Probably, we could think about adding "-" and "+" here as those would
sound logical taking into account vim bindings - if this would help
someone...
