Howdy,

I've been trying to get my H2 to boot on a linux only network for weeks
now and have been thoroughly unsuccessful. I have used a windows laptop
running the Haupage stuff to verify the device works and I can load the
mvpmc (0.3.0) on the unit (works great), so I know the unit is
functional and can/will work with mvpmc

I've read the most recent posting on getting Hx units to boot under
linux and it still won't boot.

To confirm: I have dhcp setup to offer the fixed IP address and dongle
file. I'm confident this is OK (I also have other bootp based clients
that are on my network booting a different image for different hardware
and that has been working for a long time).

I have to tftp servers -- one on port 69, one on port 16869 and using a
command line tftp client, have confirmed that a) they both can fetch
files and b) all fetch attempts show up in the system log. I've used
sym links so that any request for a file will succeed (dongle.bin,
dongle.bin.mvmpc, dongle.bin.ver and the attendant config files), though
as I point out below, we're not fetching anything over tftp yet).

I'm running the mvprelay that came with the 0.3.0 distro and it appears
to be doing something (it keeps reporting that it's "Replying to
directory query from host 10.0.5.1" -- addr of my H2). I start it with
the command

./mvprelay 16881 5906 6337 10.0.0.1

I've gone through the process to boot a MVP specified in the wiki on the
page where it talks about booting from linux (power down for 120
seconds, remove network cable, etc...).

When the unit powers up, it requests and accepts the fixed IP address
I've defined for it in my dhcpd.conf. After few moments, it scans my
network, identifies my server and then puts up a blue screen with a
number (10ish) little empty white boxes and then proceeds to fill them
in while saying "Contacting server". At that point is there I see the
mvprelay program issuing it's "Replying to directory...", but there is
absolutely no tftp traffic around.

Finally, after all the little boxes are filled in a few times, it says
error contacting GUI server. Then it goes back to the "Contacting
server" thing and repeats for ever.

Any idea what the "GUI server" it is looking for is and what to do fake
it out?

I've read everything I can find on these lists and the wiki about linux
booting and I keep getting the feeling there is a missing part -- like
folks don't realize there is still something running on a test windows
machine somewhere filling in parts of the boot process. I know there
are no windows machines on my network (only that laptop, and it's long
since been returned to the office).

I'd really appreciate any pointers on this one. I've calmed myself down
(this has been a frustrating experience) so I'm willing to discount
anything I've done here.

Thanks!!

Gerry
