I totally agree with your sentiments Fluid. As soon as I got WM6 I realised that wired activesync was painful and defective additional admin. Actvesync technology is still used for OTA sync although I'm not too bothered about how it works. Like you I use exchange which is awesome. Extremely annoying that notes don't sync and I hope that exchange server 2010 + OL2010 will remedy this ridiculous situation.
For file sync I've tried home VPN but I was spending way too much time troubleshooting and access is barred from a lot of remote places exp overseas so I'm now looking at sticking data in the cloud and letting 3rd party providers handle. Ideally I'd like to set up auto sync from my nas and then share the web copies with myself and anyone else using online permissioning system - plenty of options (dropbox / sugarsync) but most have local (IE win / Linux) clients and I've not yet found one which will install on my NAS without loads of additional admin from me. Back to MLO sync - it would be best for me if the company / guy making it would need to offer online sync solution. I want fire and forget solution and would be happy to pay monthly sub. However, given the tiny amounts of data it should be easy to put something together incorporating sync with web gui without significant cost. I tried MLO app on HTC touch HD and found the app a bit slow - agree that it is nuts that it's using a different file format from the desktop version. OTA sync with cloud hosting should be the main additional feature from V3 of this software - big challenge for the developers but would certainly save us the effort.
