I don't see it advertised as a core feature. In fact during installation you can deselect it as an optional feature.
Why do you degrade it as "so called" pro version? The version has many features that the standard version and most of the other existing todo management solutions on the market do not have. The developers put a lot of thought and effort in it. In my view, it deserves the name "pro".
Regarding the WiFi sync, I have the impression that you have the wrong expectations. WiFi syncs in your local WiFi network only, i.e. you can sync your smartphone with your PC in the SAME WiFi network, but it does not work over the Internet. When you click on the WiFi feature in the table comparing the versions, this is clearly spelled out. And I can confirm that the WiFi sync works in the same network. I've used it for years until I bought cloud sync.
If you want the more comfortable cloud sync, it's not that expensive either, just about $1 per month. Compare this with other cloud services like Evernote ($4), Any.do ($3), ToDoIst ($3), Remember the milk ($3.3).
Sure, there are things that could be better (multiple devices in WiFi sync, end-to-end encryption in cloud sync). But that doesn't mean that MLO is a bad or misleading product and not worth the money.
