Thank you to everyone who responded. 
The answer was to do everything the same way except turn off the "folder" 
option.
I'm still not sure why that won't work with the folder option turned on but 
I can do what I want now.

Thank you for the other suggestions. I get stuck using MLO in a particular 
way and seeing the other ideas for doing similar things is really helpful.
