Sindhu,

A couple of points.

1. None of us here have any direct experience studying at the CS Dept. UoM,
hence I don't think you can expect any first hand info about the FOSS
activity/environment at the UoM from the list.

2. Over the years, we've conducted several MyLUG meets, seminars, talks etc
in Mysore and we haven't had any participation from either students/faculty
of the CS Dept, UoM - not that CS depts of other colleges in our city
participated.

3. In my personal (limited) interactions, the people at the department are
more agnostic towards technology than ignorant or discouraging.

4. That said, the University has very vibrant and demanding Linux
user/hacker communities in departments including Physics, Library & Info
Science, Statistics, etc. Also, people at the computer center have been
supposedly active on the localisation initiatives. So, you can expect to
interact with atleast a number of clueful people - esp. Prof. Sridhar and
his band of merry students ;-)

5. As hoped by several posters, we always look for clueful people who get
into these departments as faculty/students to push the agenda of hackerism
and of open sourceM-b-M-bFree Software and Open Source and Standards in
these places. And after all these years, I've wisened up not to expect too
many radical changes from these places.

Summing up, you can't expect a FOSS enlightened immediate environment,
though you'll have sufficient breezes occasionally.

So, all the best with your hunt.

Joy,

No doubt GNU/Linux Habba (http://habba.in/) helped. dont know whether
> anything happened after
> that.

Precisely. I mean Habba helped create awareness. Had a couple of callbacks
from various sections of the audience and some of them are really willing to
go the whole hog and use Linux. But they don't seem to have any inherent
motivation to adapt themselves. Some have, and they've progressed a lot.

Others,

The effort to change the system is beyond one or two individuals
(male/female/whatever). At the most, individuals inspire. Sometimes awe. But
mostly, they too need to get through the system and once out, they thrive.
But inside, they adapt or whither away.

Hoping for a freer tomorrow,

Regards,
