Follow-up Comment #6, bug #17656 (project mypaint):

(untitled) in the same font size as the "Double click to enter name" might be
good. The problem with the current text is that, in addition to "click to
select" being silly, both strings are similar size so the rename prompt
doesn't stand out visually. A small text (untitled) would be distinct from
named layers and from the rename prompt on the current one.

Another thought: if you're considering moving the rename prompt to a tooltip
for the current layer, maybe the layers should be automatically given names
instead of being left blank? I just checked and this would be consistent with
both Inkscape and Gimp, which use a default name and add numbers as necessary.
(e.g. Layer#1, Layer#2, Layer#3)

Actually, Inkscape may be a good example of how to do the renaming as well:
you rename a layer by single-clicking the active layer. Click a layer to
select, then single click again after it's selected to rename. Double
clicking isn't used at all. May not be feasible with MyPaint, since it uses a
sub-window instead of providing the rename functionality in the layer window
itself.
