Follow-up Comment #2, bug #20068 (project mypaint):
_It doesn't happen every time: the interval between steps 4 and 5 needs to be

I've tested with waits of up to twenty seconds and it still locks the same
way. Tested with HCY wheel.
I've also found another way to cause it without interacting with a subwindow:
change window focus to another program, and reactivate MyPaint focus by
panning the canvas with the pen switch.
Escape does return the program to a usable state, though it's not immediately
obvious (cursor does not reset), so I didn't notice that when testing before.

Also, sorry if I cross-posted this to the forums too quickly. I didn't do it
out of impatience; after I saw the certificate errors, I began to wonder if
gna was having problems and you guys just couldn't use the site or something.
So, I decided to try there. :)
