I'm still having difficulty reproducing this problem (and it basically Works For Me right now) but I've upped the level of assurances we do that the grabs are set up correctly and will break sanely before going ahead and entering the drag. Could you test the latest git head https://gitorious.org/mypaint/mypaint/commit/d5335873bfc3a7bdfbf510d1d78b46107a9d008e and see if this fixes the problem? I'd be interested to see any "DEBUG:" lines you see in terminal output when/if it locks up again.
