I've never understood why the mysql client library would be 'undesired'. It's pretty tiny.
in my view, it's more a matter of only having to maintain one copy of large/complex queries. And like I said before, not having to deal with setting up new grant permissions for each frontend host.
Regardless, once I write a simple server app, there will be no more mysql, and it will be easy to add additional queries without the trip through the backend process.
