Can anyone please explain to me why XVID's etc. won't play (nicely) through the 350's out? Wouldn't it be possible to use the fb and simply tell mplayer to play though it? I'm lost – as usual...

Doesn't your 30" LCD display have a VGA input?

IMHO, Don't waste your time trying to use the S-Video output of a video
card. While I haven't seen them all, the ones I have seen and used
(both ATI and Nvidia) have been seriously lacking. To call that DVD
quality would be a flat out lie.
The machine (combined frontend and backend) has a Athlon 64 2800+ and
it's showing a rather high load while doing anything like XVID or live
TV, so this might actually be a problem unless the choppyness (is that
even a word?) is in fact caused by the GPU... Might it be worth
investing in a faster CPU or should this suffice?
I am sure it has NOTHING to do with your CPU speed, but everything to do
with the signal path and scan converter of your video card.
Very few people mention it, but a standalone scan converter should work.
I couldn't begin to recommend one as there are many on the market in
different price ranges.
