The "9th column" in Top is the cpu usage for a particular process. Several processes are used in the playing of HD, most nobably the X server itself and then there is time spent in drivers that may not be allocated to a process.

Is top accurate enough? X should be pretty minimal with the Nvidia driver rite? Anyway, I never investigate into the performance on linux and now am quite interested to know more...

Anyway, run the program "mpstat" (or mpstat -P ALL if doing SMP or Hyperthread)
to find out more realistic numbers.

I am using Mandrake. Anybody knows what package mpstat is under? I did a rpmfind on mpstat and tried to install via urpmi.. All to no success. Funny such a utility is not packaged.. Anyway, will try to install it later and find out.

Meanwhile, here's the "full" output from top, some processes has been deleted.

My CPU temperate via sensors is 37.5 degrees celsius and my probe on the heatsink near the cpu is 46 degrees. All in all my CPU ain't even working (idling temperate is around 36 degrees and 45 on probe)..

I think top is probably inaccurate since I am using a HT cpu? Interesting the machine is still very responsive when watching HDTV - my machine will slow down slightly when compiling programs. so in a sense compiling mythtv takes more cpu power than watching HDTV.
And I can't watch HDTV when compiling myth. But then we are comparing apples and oranges here. Would try to install mpstat later today.

On Athlon-3000s people typically see about 80% usage. On P4-3ghz we see
more like 55% usage but that number is probably a touch misleading
due to hyperthreading.

Damn. That is so much worse than on windows. What distribution are you using? Did you compile your own myth?

I suddenly realised my machine is quite unique. Probably won't re-install this weekend after all.

Regards.
