backup the DB,
upgrade with cd's
apt-get the new 17 release? (What is the command and apt-get repo for this?)
Will that work OK, or am I missing something?

I don't recommend you do that. Just upgrade it using the FC3 cdroms. I have seriously messed up a system when I tried to apt-get upgrade a FC1 system to FC2.
How does the 16 version of myth get upgraded to 17?
Is this a good method for going from 16 to 17 on FC2? I also want to upgrade to FC3.
