Dive in Peter!
Since redhat 5.2 I've always given the newest distro a
run and then sat there blinking as I really had nothing *productive* to do with
it when the install finished.
You've gone a long way to getting yourself on the road to
using linux by actually having an idea of what you want your tool to
do.
In my experience I really only started learning when things
broke, and boy do I break a lot of things. So by diving in and
trying to *do* something (mythtv is an excellent place to start!)
and by getting stuck you will get to know the workings of linux a whole
lot more, and come to understand the way things interact.
Don't come to it thinking this is how windows works, come
to it asking how does *<add your flavour of distro here>* do it? And
you will be a lot happier.
I found the windows/linux disconnection quite irritating at
first, when you can click your way blindfolded around a windows desktop
no worries, but end up staring at /usr/src/mythtv at 3am at the
morning yelling at the computer because you know nothing about cvs
or applying patches, can get annoying.
But by noon the next day you're ssh'ing in to do 'one last
recompile'.
I'm no genius (my grammar can attest to that) but I found
the online resources all the help you should ever need.
My advice is forget books, instead try
these:
Oh, and get good hardware first!!!! (trust me, don't try
unsupported, it sucks)

suggestions list members may have for a person who has never used Linux before
(I have used an mfstools version to upgrade my TiVo). I would be looking
for links and/or books on learning Linux (I am pretty Windows savvy) but probably for the
sole purpose of creating and using a mythtv
box/network. Any suggestions would be
appreciated. Regards, Peter |
