I have a file in
/home/mythtv/.lircrc /home/mythtv/.mythtv/lircrc
they are owned by mythtv user still the remote does not work...

I assume you compiled Myth from source and enabled lirc, right? If not, try
adding irxevent defs to ~/.lircrc and then run irxevent instead. Also, you
could verify that mplayer or xine (or any other lirc enabled app) works with
your .lircrc to make sure that you're setup correctly. When irw works it
only means that your /etc/lircd.conf is working.
