You're not sending the signals to the frontend machine, you're sending them to 
the backend machine. You need a remote control interface on the frontend 
machine.

Not exactly, the lirc_i2c lirc driver needs ivtv loaded, as well as an ivtv 
card.

You should probably look at getting a serial IR receiver for your frontend.
