I am using Kernel 2.6.10... has this been confirmed as the cause of heartache? (I saw discussion of it in the archives)...

It might be. Try disabling XvMC, that's what got rid of it for me. Of course my CPU usage is high now, but at least there is no stuttering. I saw a post recently that mentioned 2.6.9 as being a good kernel.
